How to Prepare for a Virtual Speed Networking Event

Article

So you’re headed to a virtual speed networking event. Congratulations! Whether your networking event is held on twine for Zoom or another networking platform, these tips will make sure you’re prepared to make productive connections.

  1. Have a clear understanding of your goals and objectives for the event.

Your conversations will be the most productive if you have a clear definition of what you’d like to get out of the speed networking event. Are you looking for a job? Are you hoping to get feedback on a business idea? Do you just want to get to know others in the industry? Knowing what you want going in will help you direct your conversations in the most effective way.

  1. Practice a compelling elevator pitch to introduce yourself or your business.

Whether your speed networking event is a recruiting fair or just a professional meetup, it’s important to be able to introduce yourself in a compelling and succinct way. Here are some tips for business elevator pitches, and tips for answering the question “tell me about yourself.”

  1. Do some background research.

If the host of your speed networking event sends out a list of participants prior to the event, look them up on Google. Learn about their recent achievements, the kind of work they do, etc. Not only will it impress people when you’re familiar with their work, but you can also determine yourself whether or not the people you’ll meet with are the ones you’d want to have in your professional network.

Not sure who will be attending? Spend time catching up on news in the industry.

  1. Make sure you’re technically prepared.

First impressions are crucial, even when you’re meeting over a screen. Test your camera and microphone beforehand. Make sure you have a non-distracting background, and if you live with others, let them know you’ll need to have this time without interruptions. And - whatever you do - do NOT join the networking event from your phone while driving!

If your virtual speed networking event is held on Zoom, try Warmly’s virtual business card feature that allows you to change your Zoom background to an informative slide about yourself or your business.

  1. Follow up after your virtual speed networking session.

Not only are you meeting a lot of people in the event, but so will everyone else. Make sure you’re remembered when it’s over. This means reaching out to the individuals you connected with and continuing the conversation. This can be done through email, LinkedIn, or other communication channels. Didn’t catch their contact info? Reach out to see if the event host will connect you, or look through who’s liked the event on social media.

If you follow the 5 tips above, you’ll be more than prepared to get the most out of your speed networking event. The best part? You get to do it all without leaving your couch.
